Ticker is the third collaborative typeface created with Karel Martens after Jungka
and Pirelli. It embodies his quintessential use of geometric forms to generate patterns
and movements that communicate beyond letters, while the variable font allows
shapes to shift from vertical to horizontal—JL TICKER 1,
diagonal to reverse—JL TICKER 2, and even
rotate with clock-like movement—JL TICKER 3.
Inspired by Martens’s mathematical precision and playful approach to colour,
shape,
movement,
and customisation,
Ticker is an elementary modular type system that enables the creation of
colour-layered, shape-variable compositions through multiple font styles controlled
by a slider.
With a basic character set available as a variable font and featuring three distinct
behaviours, the typeface enables the creation of fully customised designs. Ranging
from micro to macro, from abstract to expressive, and from monochrome to vibrantly
colourful, Ticker opens up a full spectrum of possibilities.
Through shape-shifting—adjusting sliders, expanding or compressing width,
and removing external bars from the letter—alongside layering,
colour experimentation, and overprinting, it offers endless possibilities
for dynamic and unique typographic compositions.
Ticker is not intended as a functionally sufficient typeface, but as
a spirit—an open, elementary modular playground, a digital toy for colouring and
constructing language.
